Facebook's annual 2 day F8 conference kicked off yesterday in California. CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his Facebook team started with a flurry of developer announcements, shortly followed by a list of updates which will affect the billions of daily Facebook, Instagram and Messenger users. Here is the low down from day 1, check back tomorrow for a summary of day 2.
1. Reality Platforms; your camera is everything
2017 has seen the boom of the camera, you can barely walk the street without seeing someone taking a snap of something! Whether it be using your camera to chase Pokemon, or taking your new profile picture with the latest doggie Snapchat filter, Facebook has recognised this and it played a big part in the F8 conference this year. According to Zuckerberg, the camera will now power new augmented reality experiences within the Facebook app. You will be able to get games, photo filters and your surrounding will soon be augmented thanks to the new Facebook developments
2. Social VR comes to life
Facebook spaces will be a new virtual reality app where you (and your avatar) can visit the moon, go to a gig or travel the world without leaving the comfort of your sofa. You will be able to interact with fellow avatars in a more visual, realistic surrounding. The app launches today as a beta version so we can't wait to see the final release.
3. Messenger welcomes music and games
We are all used to texting via Facebook messenger and sending cute emojis, but Facebook have now announced that you will soon be able to share music and games via the messenger app. Messenger is already connected to Spotify and Facebook developers have promised an integration with Apple music in the not too distant future
4. Photo Masks
1.8million Snapchats are created every minute in 2017, how many of these will include some sort of filter?...Our guess, a lot! Facebook is now adding filters and masks into it's photo sharing app 'Frame Studio' which interact with your facial movements.
5. "Don't forget the milk"
The new augmented reality tool will allow you to place virtual objects into the real world. Rather like CSI-style programs we all watch, this new technology will lay out a 3D grid in front of you where you can place your virtual object, whether that be "don't forget" notes to your other half, or memos on your desk. Zuckerberg is excited about this release and thinks it's the way of the future.
6. M Suggest, the rival to Alexa
Most of us have heard about Google's Alexa AI assistant, but Facebook's M system has been somewhat overshadowed. Zuckerberg promises to work on this feature and M will soon become a household name. M will be able to suggest the place to eat for dinner, interact with customers on your behalf and answer your burning questions just like Apple's Siri system.
